Trucking operators in New South Wales intending to take advantage of reduced A-trailer registration charges by cancelling and re-registering their vehicles will not need an inspection immediately.

The Roads and Maritime Services has confirmed those with A-trailers already registered will be able to take advantage of reduced registration fees which took effect on July 1 as part of new heavy vehicle charges.

The RMS says operators must cancel and re-register their A-trailers on the same day to take advantage of the lower fees and that the units must be in the same name and at the same garaging address. The concession will expire on August 31.

"To help heavy vehicle operators take advantage of the reduced charges by cancelling and re-establishing their trailer registrations, RMS will exempt the vehicle inspection requirement until 31 August 2012," RMS Director Peter Wells says.

"The decision affects about 3,200 trailers in New South Wales with some operators saving thousands of dollars in registration fees."

The RMS has established a dedicated email address for the scheme to manage requests from operators.

Customers choosing to take advantage of the concession have been told to contact the RMS and provide their customer number, name, contact details, plate number and vehicle identification numbers (VIN).

Governments agreed earlier this year to reduce the price of registering A-trailers in response to industry claims high fees were discouraging operators from using B-doubles.

The Standing Council on Transport and Infrastructure (SCOTI) endorsed recommendations from the National Transport Commission to lower the annual fee for a tri-axle A-trailer from $6,525 to $3,480. The cost of registering a tandem-axle trailer fell by $3,033 to $3,162 at the start of the new financial year.
