A major suburban traffic blitz in Melbourne’s north has started today aimed at curbing dangerous driving.

Police will flood the popular shopping strips and school zones in Reservoir, Preston and Northcote for Operation 40.

Police will also target drivers on major roads including High Street, Bell Street, Plenty Road and St Georges Road during peak travel times.

Seatbelt and mobile phone offences will be on the radar, including license and registration checks and preliminary breath tests.

Police Constable Scott Cowan says reductions to the speed limit and changes to parking regulations are designed to prevent road trauma.

“Speed limits around schools have been established to reduce the risk of injury to young pedestrians, it is essential that drivers comply with these limits,” Cowan says.

The operation will end on September 14.
