Police issue reminder on closed lanes in tunnels

Victoria Police calls on drivers to steer clear of closed lanes in tunnels, after enforcement operation busts 16 drivers

September 19, 2012

Victoria Police is calling on drivers to steer clear of closed lanes in tunnels, after 16 drivers were caught doing so in a five-hour police operation.

Senior Constable Steve Hillman says too many drivers ignore overhead signs, putting their safety and that of other road users at risk.

“Drivers need to understand that lanes are closed for a reason and ignoring these closures is not only against the law but is also extremely dangerous,” Hillman says.

“Those caught face a penalty of more than $350 along with three demerit points.”

Operation Sanctuary was held today, with officers detecting 28 traffic offences. Victoria Police says 16 motorists were caught disobeying closed lanes in the Domain and Burnley tunnels in Melbourne.
