The speed limit on the Olympic Highway at the Rock in New South Wales has been reduced to 70km/h.

The Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) says the reduction will provide more consistency in speed limits and will improve safety for road users. The limit was previously 80km/h.

Electronic message signs will remain in place for another week advising drivers of the change.

The alteration was made after the RMS conducted a review of the highway as part of an audit of speed zones, which assessed a number of factors including road environment, traffic characteristics and crash data.

Motorists are being asked to drive carefully and pay attention to new speed limits.
