Prime Minister Julia Gillard is calling on more women to join the transport industry.
Promoting equality of opportunity for women during her trip to New York, Gillard told the Equal Futures conference her government is addressing female shortage in male-dominated industries.
Gillard referred to the recently-announced $320 million Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development initiative, which will expand women’s leadership and economic and social opportunities in the region.
“It’s great to have women secretaries of state and prime ministers. But let’s have more women engineers and truck drivers as well,” Gillard says.
“First, we’re working to strengthen the pipeline of female talent in traditionally male-dominated industries. Second, we’re committed to achieving a minimum of forty percent of women on Australian government boards by 2015 – up from 35 percent today.
“Our progress so far is commendable. But near enough is not good enough.”
