A multi-vehicle collision that involves two trucks is causing major delays on the M4 motorway in Sydney.

One westbound lane and all city-bound lanes are still closed and are not expected to reopen until sometime tonight, the Traffic Management Centre (TMC) says.

It is believed five vehicles collided near the intersection of Silverwater Road about 1.15pm today.

TMC says motorists travelling westbound are free to do so, but should expect delays due to the speed limit being reduced to 40km/h.

Drivers are advised to use Victoria Road as local roads are also heavily congested. Two people involved in the collision have been taken to the Westmead Hospital.
