Radar detector seized amid evidence of tampered speed limiters

Police detect tampered speed limiters and seize radar detector and slingshot during inspection

October 19, 2012

New South Wales Police has expressed “frustration” at the trucking industry after officers detected tampered speed limiters and seized a radar detector and slingshot during heavy vehicle inspections.

Officers handed infringement notices to two drivers and defected their trucks when looking over the rigs at the Marulan checking station yesterday.

It is alleged one truck had a radar detector, while the second had a slingshot under the cabin bed. Both trucks’ speed limiters were tampered with, NSW Police says.

The driver of another truck was also accused of fiddling with his vehicle’s speed limiter and using dodgy numberplates to avoid detection from speed cameras.

“We are frustrated that despite our numerous recent campaigns targeting heavy vehicles, drivers continue to break the law,” Superintendent Stuart Smith says.

“These drivers, and companies, who continue to speed and tamper with their equipment, are putting the lives of every road user at risk.”

NSW Police says it is still conducting inquiries into the third driver and his truck. The other two trucks are grounded at the checking station while investigations continue.
