Melbourne port service centre call

Site of former Melbourne Fish Market on Footscray Road chosen as expressions of interest are requested for its redevelopment

November 14, 2012

The development of a permanent truck service centre in Melbourne’s port precinct is one step closer with expressions of interest now being sought.

VicTrack is calling on qualified organisations interested in tendering for the right to become the lessee operator and developer of the centre to come forward.

The site is located at the former Melbourne Fish Market on Footscray Road in West Melbourne.

Victorian Transport Minister Terry Mulder says the opportunity responds to the needs of the state’s growing freight industry around Port Melbourne.

“The proposed truck service centre will be the only facility of its type in the port precinct and will include truck parking, driver amenities and ancillary retail activities,” Mulder says.

“Given the high volume of traffic on Footscray Road, the 2.7 hectare site is a logical place for this type of facility.”

The former market building has been demolished and the development of the facility is expected to be completed by mid-2014.

VicTrack, owner of the land, acquired the site due to its strategic location within the Melbourne ports and the Dynon rail freight precinct to enable the provision of services that will enhance the safety of the transport logistics activities connected to the precinct.

VicTrack will operate the temporary truck stop on Footscray Road until the permanent facility is in operation.

Expressions of interest are due
by December 6.
