The Arrawarra rest area on the Pacific Highway in New South Wales has been given the green light by the Department of Transport.

The Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) is now considering options and timing to build the rest area, a department spokesperson says.

"While a rest area was proposed as part of the initial upgrade plan, further consultation and assessment of suitable sites was carried out and the Arrawarra site was selected," they say.

"Approval was then sought for the recently approved site."

Noise walls, rainwater tanks and mounted lighting will also be installed.

"Rest areas are an important component of highway designs as they encourage and ensure motorists have a place to rest on long trips," the RMS spokesperson says.

"The Arrawarra rest area forms part of the overall rest area strategy for the Pacific Highway."
