A New South Wales trucking company has been fined $8,000 for tampering with a vehicle’s speed limiter.
Homeland Freight appeared in Goulburn Local Court last Friday after Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) inspectors discovered the tampered limiter during a general inspection in July last year.
The company was found guilty. Along with the fine and a conviction, Homeland Freight was ordered to pay legal costs.
“The maximum penalty for a company found to be operating a heavy vehicle with a tampered speed limiter is $16,500 for each offence,” RMS Director of Customer and Compliance Peter Wells says.
He has used the case to issue a warning to trucking operators and says the department will continue working with police to catch offenders.
“Owner/operators of a heavy vehicle covered under this legislation who have tampered with speed limiters are on notice,” he says.
“Heavy vehicles detected speeding and having non-compliant speed limiters will be grounded.”
