New-look road to improve safety and travel times

The duplication of Melbourne's Plenty Road is now complete

The duplication of Melbourne’s Plenty Road is now complete.

The $21.8 million project features 2.4km of duplicated road from Gordons Road to Riverdale Boulevard and includes bicycle and bus lanes.

Victorian Roads Minister Terry Mulder says the route, which is known for run-off crashes, connects Melbourne with the growing northern suburbs.

“Extending the divided road will improve traffic flow and road capacity, reduce travel times and enhance safety for Plenty Road drivers,” Mulder says.

“The Plenty Road upgrade also allows for future traffic growth with the wide central median able to accommodate a third lane each way if needed in future years.”

The recently-announced $3 million safety improvement works on the road between McKimmies Road and Centenary Drive will improve road safety and lower the road toll, he adds.

VicRoads Projects Director Andrew Williams says drivers can expect some off-peak lane closures in the coming months as works such as landscaping are being finalised.

“There are always finishing touches required at the end of the project but these should have minimal impact on traffic,” Williams says.
