TWU sees UPS deal as a breakthrough

Union details a number of aspects that set new benchmark, including driver incentive plan

March 4, 2013

The Transport Workers Union (TWU) has hailed its workplace agreement at United Parcel Service (UPS) as an evidence of the union’s strength.

National Secretary Tony Sheldon states that the agreement sets a new benchmark on a range of industrial issues.

"This new agreement won by TWU members at UPS shows exactly what can be achieved when you have strong union membership in a workplace," Sheldon says.

"For a first agreement with a company, this blows the standards out of the water.

"Not only have members won rates, conditions and standards that equal those in some of our strongest enterprise agreements but, with the development of a new driver incentive plan, many workers will have the chance to exceed current remuneration standards within the industry."

The union says conditions that TWU members achieved in this new agreement include significant improvements in job security, the development and implementation of a new classification structure to create a career path for employees and a minimum rate increase for workers of 12 percent during the life of the agreement.

The agreement, "underpinned by Road Transport and Distribution Award", runs till December 31, 2015.

The TWU says the agreement allows for:

  • Site rates for labour hire, "to ensure cheaper labour options do not undermine UPS employees’ job security"
  • Minimum four-hour engagement for casuals and part-time employees
  • Redundancy provisions in excess of National Employment Standard
  • Annual four percent pay rises from April 1
  • Development of the driver incentive plan and bonus payments
  • TWUSuper named as an optional fund.
