Trucking companies from Queensland, the Northern Territory and South Australia will vie for this year’s TruckSafe John Kelly Memorial Award.

Run by the Australian Trucking Association (ATA), the award is designed to recognise TruckSafe-accredited businesses that have achieved high levels of safety and professionalism.

Bundaberg-based De Gunst Transport has been named as a finalist alongside G&S Transport from Alice Springs and South West Freight from Mount Gambier.

The award will be presented on June 21 during the National Trucking Awards ceremony, which will also hand out gongs for outstanding contribution, woman of the year and driver of the year.

The ATA says De Gunst Transport has grown froma single truck operation in 1984 to one that runs 60 prime movers and 140 trailers today.

"De Gunst Transport’s prime movers are replaced every three to five years, ensuring drivers are using safe and modern equipment when driving through our communities," the ATA says in a statement.

Family-owned G&S Transport specialises in hauling quarry products throughout remote central and north Australia and the Pilbara.

"The company has previously received an award from Rio Tinto and CEMEX Australia for professionally hauling one million tonnes of products in a 12 month period," the ATA says.

South West Freight, which has been a member of TruckSafe for more than 15 years, operates a fleet of 30 prime movers and has depots in Mount Gambier, Adelaide and Melbourne.

The ATA says the company is focused on heavily on fleet maintenance, regular compliance audits and extensive staff training.
