Victoria Police to patrol school zones

Speeding drivers in school zones will be the focus of a highly-visible police blitz in Melbourne this week

Speeding drivers in school zones will be the focus of a highly-visible police blitz in Melbourne this week.

As students return to school today, Victoria Police officers will be out in force for Operation Protect.

Both marked and unmarked cars will patrol schools in East Melbourne, Kensington, North Melbourne, Carlton, West Melbourne, Parkville and South Yarra.
Sergeant Mark Rose is warning drivers to slow down or face hefty penalties.

“Operation Protect is about protecting our children who are one of the most vulnerable road users. They are smaller, harder to see and less predictable than adult pedestrians,” Rose says.

“This is an important reminder to all motorists that school zones are now in operation.

“Those who think they can ignore school zone speed limits should remember there are fines of up to $704 and they could in fact lose their licences.”

Reduced speed limits apply around school between 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm and 4pm.

Operation Protect ends on Friday.
