The search is on for a vintage Kenworth model truck stolen from a yard in regional Victoria yesterday morning.

Skidmore Transport Equipment had a 1980 SAR Kenworth stolen from its Sebastopol premises around 2am.

Police in Ballarat wants anyone with information on the whereabouts of the white truck to come forward.

Skidmore owner Rod Skidmore, who specialises in new and used trailers, says the truck belongs to his 14-year-old son Robbie who had planned to turn it into a show truck.

"It was Robbie’s pride and joy. We were about to do it up as a show truck which we had been buying a lot of stuff for," he says.

A two-axle drop deck trailer was attached to the truck and later found in Ballarat. The offenders had used the truck to steal a tractor from a farm in Camperdown.

"The people that took it didn’t know how to drive it because there was a security man out the back and he thought it was us taking the truck at 2am. He didn’t realise it was being stolen," Skidmore says.

"He said they stalled it three times, they were crunching gears off as they drove it off."

The thieves drove the $50,000 truck through the fence, damaging the front left side, he adds.

"I don’t need this to happen to us at the moment – especially with insurance company NTI (National Truck Insurance) who claim it’s only worth $25, 000," Skidmore says.

"My son is pretty annoyed and I had to go to his school this morning to tell them why he’s not at school.

"I know a lot of people Australia-wide and it’s a very unique truck and a lot of people know that we own it. I only hope police get to them before we do."
