Double demerits in place from midnight in WA

Police in Western Australia will be handing out double demerit points over the long weekend

May 30, 2013

Road users in Western Australia caught flouting the law risk being slapped with double demerit points from midnight through to the conclusion of the State’s long weekend on June 3.

Motorists have been warned to expect double demerits if caught drink or drug driving, speeding or failing to wear a seatbelt. Police will also be targeting driver fatigue and distraction throughout the State.

“Double demerits are also in place to encourage safe driving behaviour. Research by the Office of Road Safety has shown there is about a 9 percent reduction in serious road crashes when they are in operation,” Road Safety Minister Liza Harvey says.

“Over the last five years, speed and drink driving crashes have decreased but we’re working harder to bring this down further through special enforcement programs, legislation and community education.”
