Roadwork disruption for Melbourne’s east

VicRoads warns of repercussions from work on busy Dandenong Road

May 23, 2013

There will be delays of up to an hour on Dandenong Road in Melbourne’s south-east as most outbound lanes will be closed this weekend due to tram tracks works.

Thousands of drivers will be affected as traffic on Dandenong Road and Wattletree Road will be reduced to one lane tonight, and all lanes closed between Saturday 10pm and Sunday 10am, VicRoads Road Operations Director Dean Zabrieszach says.

“Traffic counts suggest that up to 2000 vehicles an hour use this section of Dandenong Road on an average Saturday,” Zabrieszach says.

“For most of the weekend, the works will close three of the four lanes, meaning we need to displace about 1500 cars each hour on to the surrounding network.

“This will put considerable strain on roads like Orrong Road and Williams Road as traffic uses these roads to access High Street as the closest alternative east-west option.

Glen Eira Road is also expected to experience heavy traffic delays.

There will be variable message sings in the area, warning drivers of interruptions.

“Getting stuck in the delays can be frustrating. Don’t ruin a good weekend – avoid the area altogether or leave early,” Zabrieszach says.
