Traffic management technology switched on

Variable message signs on Melbourne's Western Ring Road have been switched on

May 13, 2013

Variable message signs on Melbourne’s Western Ring Road have been switched on.

Designed to allow communication flow between VicRoads administrators and road users, they will be advising of everything from a vehicle breakdown to upcoming roadworks.

Freeway ramp signals, lane use management systems and CCTV cameras will also be added to help manage and improve traffic flow, Victorian Transport Minister Terry Mulder says.

"Freeway entry ramps will feature traffic lights which are connected to an intelligent system," he says.

"The lights will detect how busy the freeway is and will turn on when needed to help manage traffic flow onto the freeway and improve travel time reliability."

The signals will also display the speed limit and lane availability, and will advise when lanes are closed.

"This will help improve safety and help return the freeway to normal conditions after an incident," Mulder says.
