Northern Territory Government holds Cabinet meeting in East Arnhem to discuss lack of federal investment in transport routes

June 11, 2013

The Northern Territory Government is holding a Cabinet meeting in East Arnhem to discuss the lack of federal investment in transport routes.

The two-day meeting starts tomorrow on Groote Eylandt in a bid to ensure the public the government is working collaboratively with regional communities, Chief Minister Adam Giles says.

“It is important to listen to our regional communities and to get government out into the broader Territory,” Giles says.

“Despite the lack of roads funding from the Federal Government and a loss in GST funding, the Territory Government remains resolute in our focus on improving regional communities.”

Giles says Groote Eylandt plays an important role in the Territory’s development with an increase in aquaculture exports to Asia and the expansion of the Groote Eylandt Mining Company to upgrade capacity to 4.8 million tonnes of manganese ore a year.

The last Cabinet meeting was held in the area three years ago.
