Drivers using the Oxley Highway have been told to expect delays later this month when cyclists will be given right of way for a riding event.

The Roads and Maritime Services says drivers can expect delays of up to 30 minutes on June 22 due to a NSW Cycling event that will start in Coonabarabran.

The women’s event is due to start at 11.30am and will travel along the Newell Highway and Oxley Highway to Gunnedah.

The men’s event will commence five minutes later and will travel along Edwards Street to Coonabarabran Road, continuing on Oxley Highway.

"The men’s event will meet up with the Oxley Highway at Mullaley and the last 36km will be staged entirely on the Oxley Highway," an RMS spokesman says.

"For safety reasons, cyclists will have use of the full width of the road and the convoy will be clearly identified with police and other escort vehicles at the front and rear.

"Motorists travelling west from Gunnedah along the Oxley Highway can expect delays of up to 30 minutes and will be required to pull off the highway to allow the cyclists a clear and safe passage."

Drivers will have to travel behind the race which will finish around 3pm at Gunnedah.
