With the sugar cane season in full swing, Queensland Police is urging drivers to stay safe on the roads.

Sergeant Gordon Turner expects this season to be busier and is calling on truck drivers to stay patient and consider other motorists.

"This cane season will see a significant increase in the number of heavy vehicles using the Mulligan and Rex highways as cane from the Tablelands is transported to the Mossman Mill," Turner says.

"Police request that all motorists exercise common sense and patience when sharing the roads and above all demonstrate consideration for other motorists.

"Consideration needs to be given to motorists following slower vehicles and also to those vehicles which are being overtaken."

Overtaking will be limited and motorists are asked to cooperate to ensure a safe travel for all, Turner adds.
