Police inquiries are underway into a fuel tanker rollover today that closed a section of the New England Highway in New South Wales.

NSW Police says a tanker carrying about 47,000 litres of fuel overturned about 2.45am at Maitland.

The truck driver was uninjured, and NSW Police says the highway at Maitland is closed in both directions until further notice.

“Northbound motorists are being diverted via Cessnock Road to Kurri Kurri and Cessnock, then along Wine Country Drive to Branxton to rejoin the New England Highway,” a statement from NSW Police says.

“Southbound motorists are being diverted on the same route in the opposite direction.

“Employees of businesses near the roundabout on High Street at Maitland will be unable to access their workplaces while the clean-up operation is underway.”

Anyone trying to get to the Maitland Hospital has been told to contact the hospital to ask for the best access route.
