Drivers who ignore speed restrictions at road work zones on Victoria’s highways will be targeted in a new police operation.

Victoria Police will launch a speed enforcement campaign called Operation Nickel on October 10, keeping a close eye on those who speed at work zones throughout the State.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill says there is a tendency for some motorists to ignore posted speed limits when travelling through restricted work zones.

"These are the drivers we will be focused on," Hill says.

"Operation Nickel is about making sure those people employed to work in road side construction zones have a safe place to work.

"We need to change the attitude of drivers on our roads who think that speeding through these areas where there are clear signs alerting motorists to reduce their speed is acceptable."

Speed limits will be in place in all road work zones and other high risk areas as part of the enforcement.

"If you speed through these zones, it is highly you will be detected and you will be fined," Hill says.
