Employees from three freight transport operators will compete for this year’s Craig Roseneder Award.

The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) announced South West Freight’s Tony Hardman, Hardy’s Haulage’s Laeton Hardy and Wayne Merrick from Boral Logistics were all in the running for the award, which recognises technical and maintenance excellence in the workshop by an individual.

The winner will be announced on October 28 at this year’s Technical Maintenance Conference.

The prize includes a trip to the American Trucking Associations’ 2014 Technology and Maintenance Council Annual Meeting and Transportation Technology Exhibition in Nashville, Tennessee and $1,500 in spending money.

The winner will also receive complimentary registration to the 2014 Technical and Maintenance Conference.

The ATA says Hardman has a strong commitment to staff training and safety, with regular toolbox meetings and courses in welding, gearbox programming and other skills.

“Tony’s meticulous approach to maintenance was one of the reasons the judging panel recognised the company as one of best TruckSafe accredited businesses in Australia,” the ATA says.

Hardy is the general manager and workshop manager of Hardy’s Haulage.

“He insists on the highest technical and maintenance standards, with new equipment undergoing up to three weeks of improvements – such as the installation of safety steps – before it enters service,” the ATA says.

Merrick is responsible for managing 130 trucks and more than 300 trailers in his role as a senior asset supervisor. The ATA says he has introduced a number of important safety features to the Boral fleet, including tailgate lock indicators for tipper bins and LED undersill door lights.

“It is said in the industry that he could rebuild a truck himself from the crankshaft up,” the ATA says.
