Major surface works for Melbourne infrastructure

CityLink tunnels and West Gate Bridge to undergo maintenance during the holiday season

October 22, 2013

Two of Melbourne’s busiest road links will be upgraded in December.

The CityLink tunnels and West Gate Bridge will undergo maintenance work as traffic volumes drop during the holiday season.

Road resurfacing in the tunnels will occur for the first time since their construction in 2000, with one lane in each direction on the bridge also to be fixed.

Ten weeks before the start, VicRoads Road Operations Director Dean Zabrieszach says key travel dates such as Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve will not be impacted.

"Between 150,000 and 180,000 vehicles use this important corridor but over Christmas and New Year this figure drops by about 30 per cent," Zabrieszach says.

"This information was vital in planning the timing of the work and the diversion routes that will be in place.

"We were able to design a schedule that lets us avoid daytime lane closures and do the works at night under a full bridge closure."

Victorian Roads Minister Terry Mulder says the extensive resurfacing that is coordinated by CityLink and VicRoads has been fast-tracked, with both locations to be closed at the same time in a bid to minimise traffic interruption during the holiday season.

"It’s great to see CityLink and VicRoads working together for months assessing the various options available to enable the works to be carried out and then planning diversion routes that provide the best alternative," Mulder says.

Motoring group RACV has welcomed the works, saying the timing is right.

"Historically, major works on the West Gate Bridge have been held during this period and RACV is pleased to see that VicRoads and CityLink have planned the shutdowns to avoid disruptions," RACV Public Policy General Manager Brian Negus says.
