Second stage of M80 Ring Road complete

Latest stage sees opening of all traffic lanes between Western Highway in Sunshine West and Sunshine Avenue in St Albans

The second stage of Melbourne’s M80 Ring Road is now complete.

The $2.25 billion upgrade saw the opening of all traffic lanes between the Western Highway in Sunshine West and Sunshine Avenue in St Albans yesterday.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss says the freeway, which features four lanes in each direction and five between Western Highway and Tilburn Road, will help improve traffic flow and deliver safer conditions for more than 142,000 drivers each day.

"The 38km M80 Ring Road is a nationally significant freeway, key to Victorian and interstate freight movements and for daily commuters travelling across metropolitan Melbourne," Truss says.

The freeway features on-road and overhead electronic messaging designed to provide drivers with current travel time and lane use information.

Victorian Transport Minister Terry Mulder says the lane use management system will operate between the Western Highway and Sunshine Avenue, allowing VicRoads to adjust the speed limit and lane availability to suit road conditions and improve overall safety for drivers.

"The Victorian Government is providing VicRoads with the latest tools to better manage our roads and provide drivers with the information to safely navigate our freeway network," Mulder says.

The 10.7km section between the Calder Freeway and Sydney Road was completed earlier this year.

The third section currently underway is the 6.8km stretch between Edgars Road and Plenty Road, with works expected to finish in mid-2014.
