The Queensland Trucking Association (QTA) has welcomed the upgrade of the Maranoa River Bridge at Mitchell in Queensland, saying it will boost freight efficiency.

QTA CEO Peter Garske says the bridge, which was destroyed during the 2011 floods, will allow trucks to travel east on the Warrego Highway.

The new bridge was opened during the weekend and will provide a safer link between Mitchell and Roma, including south-west Queensland.

It is part of the $58 million upgrade to the Warrego Highway between Roma and Mitchell.

“As I understand it there are still some issues east of Mitchell on the Warrego Highway with some damaged culverts, they need to be repaired as part of the works program that’s currently being funded across the length of the Warrego,” Garske says.

“When that happens then we’ll have access for type two road trains.

“The bridge will now provide access to B-doubles, B-triples and type one road trains.”
