Summer Stay operation focuses on speed

Speed enforcement is on Victoria Police’s agenda this summer, with the force launching a new operation aimed at lead-foot motorists in Melbourne’s east.

Operation Slow Down was launched today and will run in Boroondara, Whitehorse and Manningham until February.

The operation is part of the Summer Stay campaign aimed at reducing road trauma over the holiday season.

Nunawading Senior Sergeant Wayne Elston says speeding makes up over 30 per cent of collisions.

“Over a five-year period to July 31 in 2013, the eastern region recorded 491 fatalities and 7,926 serious injury collisions,” Elston says.

“These figures are concerning to police and we once again urge everyone to take care on our roads.

“We will be out and about over the coming months and will target all aspects of road policing as part of this blitz.”
