Carways subbie takes pride in smick KW T404

Chris Potbury followed his father into the car carrying business. Now he has his own Kenworth T404 SAR that’s truck show material.

Chris Potbury is an owner-driver, subcontracting for car-carrying firm Carways. He operates a 2007 Kenworth T404 SAR, and it’s one smick looking rig.

Chris, from Jugiong in New South Wales, needed to paint the Kenworth green and have a large cab frame fitted and he went to a lot of trouble to make the SAR look as good as possible.

“I picked a green that I liked. It’s metallic and I’m happy with the result. When I bought the SAR, I had to change the frame and move it forward to suit a new Pacific trailer,” he explains.

Car carrying seems to run in the Potbury family, with Chris’s father Wayne driving for Carways for more than 30 years. He originally picked up a Ford HN80 for the job, but he always wanted a Kenworth.

“They are so strong and sturdy and that has proved to be the case,” Chris says.

The SAR has clocked up over 1 million kilometres. Except for a rebuild at 300,000km, it has been pretty much trouble free for Chris.

“It’s a pretty big truck with 550hp [410kW]. It was bought for the job and the rig handles it easy,” he says.

Chris took the truck to Nixons Wagga to do the modifications on the cab frame and add the finishing touches.

“People tell me that it’s a nice looking truck. I’m not sure but I’m proud of it so I started to present it at truck shows, going to Oaklands and Penrith,” he says.

“I’m happy to have paid it off and now I can just kick along and see what happens.”
