Mack Muster a serious success

More than 120 Macks made their way to the second international Mack Muster in Victoria.

Mack Muster a serious success
Disco Westendorp has vowed to hold another Mack Muster at Kyabram in 2016.

A 1923 AC Mack, a 1988 Bicentennial Super-Liner and four 2013 Southern Cross Macks were among 120 Macks at the Kyabram Mack Muster on March 15 and 16.

Disco Westendorp is thrilled to see 120 Macks at Kyabram, Victoria, for the second international Mack Muster.

He is leaning on the purple Mack Super-Liner LT he drives for Western Truck Towing. It features a mural of the Joker but it is a serious performer at heavy vehicle recoveries.

Westendorp says Macks are built to work.
"To a lot of blokes they’re a working man’s truck. They’re tough. They’re robust. They do the job," he says.

He is frank about what inspired him to put on a Mack Muster.

"I got drunk one night and went, ‘I’m going to put on a Mack Muster’," Westendorp says.

In 2010, 65 Macks met at Colac. It was a good day out, but Westendorp didn’t recover his costs.

The Kyabram Vintage Engine Club invited him to hold his 2014 muster at Kyabram. He accepted, knowing it would reduce expenses.

Westendorp enlisted the help of Dave Willis and John Laffan to help organise the event.

National Road Transport Hall of Fame CEO Liz Martin was a draw card at the dinner.

Even intermittent rain couldn’t dampen the weekend’s success.

"I’m rapt with the turnout," Westendorp says, surveying the 120 Macks at the Kyabram Showgrounds.

Many have travelled from interstate – New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and even Tasmania.

He says almost every model of civilian Mack truck used in Australia is represented.

The oldest is David Daws’ 1923 AC. Among the 2013 models are four trucks from the limited edition Southern Cross series - three Super-Liners and one Titan.

But the star of the show is ‘John Flynn’, a 1988 Bicentennial Super-Liner.
