Geelong driver reunion marks 40 years
Ron and Lorraine Powell, and Ray Harty, have been with the GTDSC since its first meetings in 1974.

Past and present members of the Geelong Transport Drivers’ Social Club (GTDSC) will reunite in September to celebrate the club’s 40th anniversary.

The lively club has 42 members who hope former members and their families will join them at the Bell Park Sports Club, Geelong, Victoria, on Saturday night September 20 for a club reunion.

The GTDSC was formed in 1974 by a group of trucking families. One of the club’s goals was to provide a network of support for mothers who shared the common experience of raising children while their husbands were on the road. The families also wanted their children to enjoy a Christmas Party complete with Santa Claus and gifts.

"We had Ford in Geelong, and Alcoa, and they all had a Christmas breakup for their workers and their children," says Lorraine Powell who has been an active member of the club throughout its 40 years. "My kids never got to go to a Christmas party breakup until we formed this club. It is wonderful. We looked forward to it every year."

The young children who attended the first Christmas parties now have children of their own, but the annual Christmas party continues. Fundraising throughout the year enables Santa to present gifts to over 70 of the members’ children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lorraine’s late husband Ken Irwin and new partner Ron Powell were both foundation members and life members.

Ron is excited all the surviving life members plan to attend the club’s reunion – Ray Harty, Peter Redding, John Ryan, Paddy McRandall, Kirk Delladio, Norm Stow, Charlie Bingham and Bob Spark.

Past members wishing to attend should contact Ron Powell on 0412 732 663 or Peter Redding on 03 5282 1921 by early September.
