Kevin Cameron enjoys life behind the wheel of a B-double.
The trucking industry is hard to crack for young would-be drivers with no experience.
Fortunately for Kevin Cameron, a farmer and family friend named Dave Parker taught him how to drive on the land by having him cart hay to the shed.
Those early lessons have helped Cameron, who now gets around in a Kenworth K200 pulling B-double trailers for fresh produce transporter Orsida Fresh.
“He [Dave] taught me the basics of driving a truck before I could drive a car,” Kevin says.
“That was good for me as I had always been interested in trucks.”
When Kevin began with Orisda he had a heavy rigid licence and had to wait one year before he was able to get his heavy combination licence. In the meantime he operated an excavator and other machinery.
Owner//Driver spoke with Kevin as he was about to head out to Brisbane via the New England Highway.
“It’s going to be a new route for me but I’m sure it will be okay, just slow and steady,” he says.
With only two years’ driving experience, the novelty of driving a B-double interstate hasn’t worn off. On the contrary, Kevin is rapt in the job.
“So far I’m enjoying it. It’s good freight, great gear and they are great people to work for,” he says.
