Haulmark Trailers apprentice wins prestigious CVIAQ award

Fraser Hemming of Haulmark Trailers (Australia) has been voted the 2014 CVIAQ Apprentice of the Year.

Fraser Hemming from Haulmark Trailers has won the Commercial Vehicle Industry Association of Queensland’s (CVIAQ) Apprentice of the Year Award for 2014.

More than 170 people gathered in inner Brisbane last night for the award ceremony, which is now in its fourth year.

The award is open to apprentices in the heavy vehicle repair, service and manufacturing sectors in the final stages of their training, and Hemming beat 11 other finalists to claim the prize.

Hemming, who will soon receive a Certificate III in Automotive Manufacturing Technical Operations received a trophy, certificate, an Apple iPad and tools to the combined value of about $1,600.

Haulmark Trailers workshop manager Wayne Duncan accepted the Apprentice of the Year perpetual trophy from Sam Savva, who won last year’s award.

The perpetual trophy was introduced in 2011 for the employer of the winner to display in their office for the year between awards.

Finalists James Allison from Cummins South Pacific, and Joshua Brumm and Karl Jacoby from MTU Detroit Diesel all received a High Achievement Award.

A Certificate of Merit each went to Ben Snow from Volvo Commercial Vehicles in Brisbane and Nathan Fogg and Luke Gray from the Brown & Hurley Group.

Alex Patron and Jason Trigger from Brisbane Isuzu, Daniel Wright from Hastings Deering, Aaron Wemyss from Scania and Daniel Johnston from Volvo Commercial Vehicles Brisbane all received a Certificate of Recognition.

The evening also celebrated Graham Mannion from SkillsTech Australia for his contribution over many years to industry training.

Mannion received the CVIAQ Industry Recognition Award, which celebrates outstanding achievement that results in a significant contribution to the commercial vehicle industry.

CVIAQ says Mannion began his career as a trainer in 1987 and was instrumental in the development and introduction of the AUM Automotive Manufacture bus, truck and trailer training package in Queensland.

The CVIAQ says the package has led to an increase in the number of students undertaking training in the trailer and body building sector of the industry.

Mannion has worked with Auto Skills Australia in the further development of the training package and continues to build strong working relationships with employers in Queensland that have apprentices completing the bus, truck and trailer package.

The event was sponsored by Bauer Trader Media, publisher of Owner//Driver.
