Investment in driver training pays off for Murphy Transport Solutions

Chief operating officer says staff training programs have improved the company’s culture and productivity.

Murphy Transport Solutions’ decision to put its workforce through accredited training is paying off for the company and its employees.

Murphy Transport’s truck drivers have completed a Certificate III in Driving Operations, warehouse workers have undergone training to achieve a Certificate III in Warehousing Operations and administrative employees have obtained a Diploma of Business.

Staff completed the courses through the Victorian Transport Association’s (VTA) training and labour solutions arm, the VTA Academy.

“I’ve got to tell you by doing this course and getting our people involved, the pride that our drivers and our operatives got from getting their certificates really just gave us a boost in the culture,” Murphy Transport chief operating officer Brendan Hopley, who is also the president of the VTA, says.

“It improves our productivity and so on, the drivers [and] the warehouse operatives felt more included in the process and we’re offering them career paths and that’s all about retaining good people in our business.”

Drivers who completed a Certificate III in Driving Operations underwent training on load restraint, vehicle inspections, occupational health and safety, fatigue management and sustainable work practices.

Hopley says Murphy Transport’s workforce has embraced the training on offer, including one veteran truck driver who received his certificate at a recent company ceremony.

“This guy’s pushing 70, he’s been with us for over 30 years and he was so chuffed. And in turn we were too to see how proud that he was that for the first time in his working career he had formal recognition of the skillset and the value that be brought to our business, and not just to our business but to the industry as a whole,” Hopley says.

“It was just great to see the pride people are taking in all of this.”

The VTA Academy offers certificates in driving operations, warehousing operations and frontline management, and diplomas of management and business.
