Bellata is a tiny town on the Newell Highway with a surprisingly big truckstop.

Truckstop of the month: Bellata Roadhouse
A good sales pitch entices the truckies to stop at the BP Roadhouse at Bellata.

Truck drivers traversing one of the worst stretches of national highway in eastern Australia at least have a bit of an oasis to stop at. There are even some palm trees out the front.

The BP Roadhouse at Bellata is about halfway between Narrabri and Moree on the Newell Highway in northern New South Wales.

The green-themed truckstop emerges from the vast grain-growing plains in this part of the world, with Brisbane another six hours or so further on.

It’s surprisingly large for a service station in a town with a population of no more than 500.

The site features eight high-flow diesel pumps and two AdBlue bowsers, which are accessible from any of the diesel pumps.

All the bowsers are undercover and fuel is available 24/7.

The facility is operated by Lowes Petroleum Service, a large independent fuel distributor.

The Lowes Petroleum manager who looks after Bellata, Janelle Butler, speaks highly of both customers and staff.

"Particularly through the week, the truck traffic is phenomenal," Janelle says.

"There’s a lot of truckies coming in, they’re nice people, they’re good guys, they’re very friendly."

One of the best features of the roadhouse is the large truck parking area, most of it concrete, and with trees along one side for shade, which is a real bonus for those having a long break.

Inside there are separate showers and toilets for truckies as well as their own separate dining room, which is open from 6am to 10pm every day.

Food is cooked on the premises with a full menu including steak, fish or chicken with veggies or salads, along with the more routine offerings like pies, hamburgers and bacon and eggs.

Free coffee is offered with any fuel or food purchase, while the corner-store style shop has a few grocery lines for the locals, which can also come in handy for drivers.
