January deadline for LBCA Young Driver Award nominations

LBCA says award winner will be a role model for rural transport industry.

A January deadline has been set for the trucking industry to get its nominations in for next year’s Livestock and Bulk Carriers Association (LBCA) Young Driver of the Year Award.

The gong is awarded to a driver under the age of 35 who demonstrates best practice in driving and safety in the livestock and bulk transport sector.

The LBCA says nominations are open until January 22, 2016, with the winner to be announced at the association’s annual conference at Bathurst starting on March 4.

The prize includes a $5,000 trip to the US.

Livestock and Bulk Carriers President, Jock Carter, announced today that the Association is seeking nominations for young driver of the year for 2016.

“The young driver award recognises our top young drivers and showcases their commitment to safety and best practice.  It’s something we should all strive to achieve and be proud of,” LBCA president Jock Carter says.

“The award winner will be a role model for the rural transport industry and will help to promote rural transport as a viable, long-term career choice for young people.”

Carter has used the award to highlight the importance of rural transport firms and drivers to Australia.

“Without rural transporters, Australia’s farm produce couldn’t get from the farm to the table,” he says.

“The job of driving trucks is a lot more challenging than people realise.  With an ageing workforce, the industry needs to make steps to encourage younger drivers to take up a worthwhile profession”.

Owner-driver Raymond ‘Reggie’ Sutton was the inaugural winner of the award at this year’s LBCA conference.

Those interested in nominating someone can contact the LBCA for a nomination form.
