Keasts full of praise for Scanias

Paul and Brad Keast of Kempsey have gone against tradition, buying a couple of Scania R620s for their long-haul runs.

Keasts full of praise for Scanias
Paul Keast has added two Scania R620s to his fleet.

If you are a regular on the Pacific or Hume Highways, chances are you will see Paul Keast or his son Brad Keast driving their two new Scania R620s.

Look for the green ribbon design on white which is common to all three trucks in the PR & HM Keast fleet. The word ‘Awesome’ is written above the front windscreens.

The R620s are almost identical. Paul’s truck features a painting of a Scania eagle. Brad’s has the Incredible Hulk. "That’s the only way you can tell them apart," says Paul who lives in Kempsey, New South Wales.

He is impressed with the fuel efficiency and says the smooth ride sets the Scania apart from every other truck he has owned. "It’s just so comfortable to drive. After doing 11 or 12 hours in it you feel pretty good when you get to the destination. You’re not cramped up in the legs or anything like that."

And he loves his Scania’s manoeuvrability. "You can turn around at the end of a cul-de-sac."

Paul hasn’t owned a European truck since he sold his old 1418 Benz and admits he would never have considered buying a Scania if Brad wasn’t such a big fan. Brad was a diesel mechanic before he began driving for the family business 14 years ago.

"He always wanted a Scania," Paul says. "I said if you hang around we’ll buy one. So that’s what happened."

Paul’s Scania arrived first, in October 2015. Brad took delivery of his in January.

Brad enjoys time in the workshop, maintaining the fleet’s trucks and trailers. But Scania’s three-year service plan has freed up time which Brad and Paul can spend with family.

"If anything goes wrong, the guys up there at K&J Trucks, they can’t do enough for you," Brad says. "If there’s any little dramas they do it straight away."
