Number of fatal crashes involving heavy rigid trucks decreased during the past year
The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE’s) Fatal Heavy Vehicle Crashes Australia bulletin for the March quarter shows a slight decrease in the number of deaths due to heavy vehicle crashes compared to the previous corresponding period.
The 12 months to March this year recorded 204 fatalities from 186 fatal crashes involving heavy trucks or buses compared to the previous period that saw 220 deaths from 188 fatal crashes.
The figure indicates 108 deaths from 98 crashes involving articulated trucks and 77 deaths from 72 crashes involving heavy rigid trucks.
While fatal crashes involving articulated trucks increased by 4.3 per cent compared with the corresponding period one year earlier, it has decreased by an average of 4.4 per cent annually over the past three years to March 2016.
Fatal crashes involving heavy rigid trucks decreased by 6.5 per cent compared with the previous corresponding period and decreased by an average of 3.3 per cent per year over the past three years.
