Reminder: Registration fees to change on Friday
Most truck operators to cough up more from Friday.

Announced last year, the new charges for heavy vehicle ownership will take effect from Friday.

Under the changes agreed to by Australia’s transport ministers in November, operators will see registration fees for most of their truck combinations rise from July 1.

The decision sparked outrage among the trucking industry at the time, which determined the industry was being overcharged by more than $500 million in registration and fuel fees.

Despite the pleas, the new pricing structure is going ahead and, according to the National Transport Commission (NTC), it will guarantee the same revenue as 2015-16 and fund the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.

While most fee-payers will see a rise, there are a number of operators who will be better off under the changes.

The heavy vehicle fees for a prime mover hauling a single semi-trailer will fall, the amount varies upon the number of axles, and so will heavy semi-trailers with 4 or 5 axles.

Lead trailers with 2 or more axles will also fall, in some cases by up to $3,575, and dolly trailers will also see a dramatic price reduction from between $574 and $2,870 to a range between $55 and $70.

Primary producer fees will also drop for the combinations mentioned above.

For the other combinations, the registration price will rise from the start of the next financial year.

The NTC says the changes are a result of "three key reasons", which it outlines as:

  1. A revised schedule of registration charges for heavy vehicles and trailers—reflecting the latest research on road wear and incorporating axle group charging for articulated trailers—which was agreed to by the Council in May 2014.
  2. The incorporation of a ‘regulatory component’ of registration charges to fund the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) from 1 July 2016.
  3. The scaling up of all registration charges necessary in order to keep registration charge revenue at the same level as in 2015-16.

A full list of the new pricing structure is available on the NTC website, which is accessible here.
