WARTA restructures

State peak body to split the bus and freight into separate division under one roof

The Western Australian Road Transport Association (WARTA) has unveiled a restructure that see the freight and bus divisions focus more clearly on their own concerns but recognises financial pressures affecting the body.

On explaining the changes to its members, Dennis Sutton from the WARTA committee of management says the changes aims to:

  • Put identifying and representing member interests at the heart of the association’s activities
  • Develop effective engagement with state and federal governments
  • Achieve the two objectives cost-effectively.

The CEO’s position has been dispensed with and Sutton will act as operations manager to oversee the re-structure on behalf of the committee of management.

WARTA’s freight and logistics division will be led by Cam Dumesny, who is formally appointed this week, while bus division will be headed by Wally Gragano.

“Road transport issues differ immensely between the different sections of our industry from metropolitan couriers to remote transport in the Kimberley,” Sutton says.

“Therefore member interest groups are being formed to identify issues, set priorities and positions for WARTA to action.

“These groups meet via teleconference on a frequency agreed by members from monthly to quarterly.”

The groups are:

  • Strategic Freight Policy Group (Issues effecting all WA Transport)
  • Dangerous Goods Group
  • Metropolitan Transport Operations Group (e.g. issues such as access and parking issues, local council restrictions etc)
  • Civil Construction and Quarry Operations Group
  • WARTA Women in Transport
  • Pilot and OSOM group
  • Port Transport Operators Group,
  • Remote Transport Group (joint with NTRTA)
  • SA and WA Cross Border (joint with SARTA)
  • WA Strategic Industry Training Group
  • Agricultural Supply Chain Group (proposed joint group with WA Farmers Federation)
  • Towing Industry Group
  • Mining and Resource sector transport operations group.

“Since testing the new WARTA model over the last six weeks, the feedback from members involved has been incredibly positive and supportive,” Sutton says.
