Latest instalment of blitz sees speed limiter and defective brakes feature
An ongoing New South Wales Joint Traffic Taskforce heavy vehicle compliance effort has seen 37 vehicles inspected resulting in a number of shortfalls, police report.
Dubbed Operation Catapult 3 and focused this week on major roads around Rosehill, in Sydney’s west, it resulted in 17 defect notices and 22 infringement notices being issued.
The chosen vehicles were mostly tipper and dog combinations related to the WestConnex road project.
These involved:
- four electronic speed limiters found to be non-compliant
- 22 infringements issued for various offences
- 17 defect notices, including six for defective brakes.
Assistant commissioner Michael Corboy of the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command said Joint Traffic Task Force operations will continue to ensure trucks are safe and compliant.
“The Joint Traffic Taskforce will continue to target the heavy vehicle industry until we can make sure that owners, operators and drivers are doing the right thing.
“We work closely with Roads and Maritime, the Environment Protection Authority and SafeWork NSW to ensure trucks are safe and compliant.
“Today we issued 22 infringements and handed out 17 defect notices for trucks that are not roadworthy. It is not good enough.
“We will continue to make everyone involved in the transport industry accountable until we can ensure that the public are safe.”
Despite the stern words, Corboy tells radio talkback host Ray Hadley there had been some improvement on previous efforts, with no licence, registration or drug offences and only one “minor overweight” contravention.
This part of the operation follows the first at the start of March and the second mid-month.
The Joint Traffic Taskforce consists of officers from the NSW Police Traffic & Highway Patrol Command and Roads and Maritime inspectors working alongside officers from the Environmental Protection Authority, and SafeWork NSW.
