‘Shine a Light’ road safety campaign closes in

host of activities are in progress in the build up to the ‘Shine a Light on Road Safety’ campaign being launched during the second week in May by Road Trauma Support Services Victoria.

The ‘Shine a Light on Road Safety’ campaign is in its fourth year, aiming to raise the safety-related awareness of motorists.

On Friday 12 May motorists will be asked to ‘Turn on Your Headlights’ to ‘Shine a Light’ on Road Safety.

The campaign coincides with the fourth United Nations Global Road Safety Week with the theme ‘Save Lives: #Slow Down’

Road Trauma Support Services Victoria (RTSSV) has the support of the Victorian Government and leading road safety agencies.

Government buildings will be lit up over the period of the campaign and VicRoads will launch digital visual messaging in the second week in May to encourage motorists to turn on their headlights.

Messaging on gantries and billboards will be in place along highways to the South Australian and New South Wales borders.

Victorian Police Assistant Commissioner of Road Policing, Doug Fryer, has once again been announced as Campaign Ambassador.

Such is the importance of this road safety campaign as winter approaches, that leading automotive lighting company Narva is once again backing the campaign as part of its community service.

Other major sponsors include Transurban with the illumination of the Bolte Bridge, East Link-signage, Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, Shine Lawyers, Slater & Gordon, Grainger Legal, Stillwell Motor Group with the campaign supported by Victoria Police, TAC and Vic Roads.

A number of landmark city buildings will be illuminated during the campaign include the Melbourne Arts Centre Spire, Victorian State Library, Melbourne Town Hall, The Exhibition Building, Melbourne Star and Ballarat Town Hall whilst major buildings in other state capitals will also be illuminated.

Starting the week of activity off in Melbourne on Sunday 7 May will be a community walk which will be held this year at Albert Park Lake.

As the campaign goes national, Friday 12 May will see road trauma teams in Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, NSW and the Northern Territory Department of Road Transport participating in lighting up buildings and requesting motorists to turn on their headlamps for road safety.

“The value of the work undertaken by RTSSV with people affected by road trauma is making a real difference to victims and the families of victims and at the same time their education programs are changing attitudes of drivers,” said Narva Marketing Manager Jake Smith.

“As a major supplier of world leading automotive lighting Narva will play an important part in the ‘Shine a Light on Road Safety’ campaign being launched in May with posters and in-store display material.”

Narva is encouraging motorists to check all their vehicle lights and upgrade their headlamps for improved visibility prior to the onset of winter.

Automotive outlets throughout Australia are behind Narva’s initiative with expert advice, in-store signage and displays of the latest in advanced automotive headlamp globes.

Coordinating the campaign is Road Trauma Services Victoria (RTSSV) a not-for-profit organisation contributing to the safety and wellbeing of road users.

RTSSV provides counselling and support to people affected by road trauma and addresses attitudes and behaviours of road users through education.
