Op Tango targets towie compliance

Compliance blitz in Sydney results in defect notices and fines for non-compliant tow trucks

Multiple defect and infringement notices, and fines were issued in the Bankstown Local Area of Sydney yesterday during a tow truck compliance and safety blitz.

New South Wales Joint Task Force and Highway Patrol officers joined the teams from Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), and NSW Office of Fair Trading’s Tow Truck industry compliance during Operation Tango.

The teams inspected a total of 13 tow trucks including, light commercial and heavy vehicle types.

Six minor defect notices were issued by RMS inspectors for a range of mechanical defects, such as cracked towing cradle, hydraulic fluid leaks, inoperative lights/reflectors and worn tyres.

NSW police issued eight infringement notices and fines for various offences.

One of the tow trucks inspected revealed the driver and vehicle to be unlicensed for carrying out towing work and the total weight on the truck exceeding the permitted limit. It led to fines including:

$1,100 for carrying out unauthorised towing work
$1,100 for driving an unlicensed tow truck without a driver’s certificate
$842 for driving a motor lorry that exceeded the motor lorry mass limit.

Meanwhile, tow truck compliance officers issued five infringement notices for issues including incorrect licence numbers, incorrect business names, missing signage and essential safety equipment.
