ATA joins national road safety program

Peak trucking body will also participate in this year’s Re-Act campaign

The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) and Trucksafe have joined the National Road Safety Partnership Program (NRSPP) in a bid to develop and implement effective road safety strategies.

ATA CEO Ben Maguire says the partnership with NRSPP will also result in the trucking body participating in the 2018 Re-Act campaign.

“Death and injury on our roads impacts us socially, financially and economically. It is paramount that the trucking industry contributes effectively to reducing and ultimately eliminating road trauma,” Maguire says.

“I’m thrilled to announce that as part of our partnership with the NRSPP, the ATA will join the 2018 Re: Act campaign.

“The focus of the campaign being – improving the safety of young road users when interacting with trucks.

“Over the next 12 months NRSPP will also feature case studies and webinars of leading ATA members.

“We thank NRSPP for the opportunity to join the program and contribute to improving safety for all road users.”

NRSPP is funded by a range of state governments and the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) and delivered by ARRB.

The program aims to “break knowledge barriers and facilitate information transfer across all industries about managing risk and reducing the road toll”.

NRSPP manager Jerome Carslake has welcomed ATA as the latest partner.

“NRSPP is proud to have ATA join the partnership,” Carslake says.

“Unfortunately, heavy vehicles are over represented in the number of fatalities involving third parties and in the majority of these crashes the heavy vehicle is not at fault – there is a real lack of understanding about sharing the road safely with heavy vehicles.

“One of the primary aims of the NRSPP is to bring sectors together.

“With the ATA becoming a partner, we can seek to bridge critical understanding.”
