Kenworth 950 Legend Available For Auction

SPONSORED CONTENT: A customised 2015 Kenworth Legend 950, one of only 75 produced, is headlining GraysOnline’s week-long prime mover auction.

You don’t have to be a card-carrying truck fanatic to see that GraysOnline has just kicked off quite an extraordinary auction. Headlining its week-long prime mover auction – which opens at 4pm on Thursday, April 19 and runs until 8pm (AEST) on April 26 – is a 2015 Kenworth Legend 950, one of only 75 produced. Also going under the hammer are four Kenworth K104 cab-overs, three Volvo FH16s and a CAT CT630.

The Kenworth Legend 950 limited edition series was a new release of the much-loved prime mover originally sold between 1992 and 2007; a classic “legend” look and feel of the 950 combined with a modern technological and safety edge. The demand for the truck far outstripped supply, and not even Kenworth predicted that all 75 trucks would be snapped up within 48 hours of going on sale. For the many who missed out in 2015 this auction offers a rare chance for a second bite at the cherry.

The interior in the 950 is a pleasant place to be!

Designed and built at Kenworth’s Bayswater facility in Melbourne, the Legend 950 has an 18-speed Eaton manual transmission and an ISXe5 615 horsepower Cummins engine. The most striking feature is possibly the retro styling of the finish; the parchment interior with wood grain dash and gear knob, and the Legend 950 badging throughout the cab. It looks like a collector’s dream, and drives like a workhorse.

What really sets this truck apart from the other 74 produced though is the attention to detail Melbourne vendor Frank has given to fine-tuning the truck during the two years he’s owned it.

A life-long Kenworth fan with 45 years’ driving experience, Frank wasted no time in making it the best possible truck he could from a driver’s perspective. Through approved Kenworth workshops, he’s changed the shock absorbers and modified the front springs, plus added an air-ride suspension at the back of the cab, giving an overall softer ride.

More homely comfort factors haven’t been overlooked either. He’s installed not one but three fridges and a microwave, and a 60-inch bunk. “You’ll know you’ve had a sleep when you lie down in this thing,” Frank says.

It also has reverse-cycle air-conditioning running hot or cold into the bunk, meaning you can run it all night on heat, making frigid winter’s night sleep a thing of the past.

As any 950 driver will tell you, the truck has been built to handle. It’s the kind of truck you can throw into a corner and have every confidence it will stand up, even when heavily loaded. The truck has done 254,000 kilometres, with the last year spent doing only local work while getting spruced up.

Frank compares the improvements he’s made on the truck to what you might do to a car. “It’s like taking a perfectly good Commodore and making it better, making it the sports version, giving it that attention to detail. That’s what I’ve done with this truck. Everything I’ve done is to make it drive and feel that much better.”

The passionate vendor has passed up the option of selling privately to go with GraysOnline because of the company’s exceptional knowledge and personnel. “It means a hell of a lot to me when people are honest and that’s one of the reasons I’ve gone with Grays. I know they’ll get the best value for me as a vendor and also the best truck for the buyer,” Frank says.

Take a seat…

For GraysOnline Business Development Manager Gillian Harvey, this fortnight’s auction is something special. “This is an example of GraysOnline’s commitment to the transport industry. It’s the great Aussie dream, to drive a big, beautiful Kenworth, and they don’t come any better than this. It’s built to withstand Australian conditions, the harshness of the roads and the heat. We know it will attract buyers Australia-wide.”
