Uber scraps self-driving trucks

Uber has announced it is hitting the brakes on self-driving trucks, halting development and instead directing its attention to its autonomous car technology.

The announcement, outlined in a Reuters report, comes two years after Uber acquired self-driving truck startup Otto.

Earlier this year Owner//Driver reported on self-driving trucks secretly moving freight in Arizona via the Uber Freight service.

In a video at the time, Uber explained that their plan is to use self-driving trucks to complete the highway leg of a journey, while human drivers will do the rest.

This has been scrapped and Uber has said employees involved with self-driving trucks will shift to autonomous car technology development.

“We believe having our entire team’s energy and expertise focused on (self-driving cars) is the best path forward,” Head of Uber Advanced Technologies Group Eric Meyhofer reportedly said in a statement.
