Permits correction for B-doubles in Melbourne’s Inner West

VicRoads issues note to industry on requirements in Melbourne’s inner west

VicRoads is making plain to owners of B-doubles they must have a permit from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) to travel on Somerville Road in Yarraville.

VicRoads heavy vehicle services director Eric Henderson says the requirement for permits is in place to strike a balance between the needs of industry and community concerns about safety, congestion, truck noise and emissions.

“We recently identified an error on our website where Somerville Road was listed as an approved B-double truck route, when it is not,” Henderson says.

“This has now been corrected.

“We’re working with industry to ensure they comply with curfew and permit requirements to travel on Somerville Road.

“Our Transport Safety Services Team has increased patrols to make sure that drivers are aware of the rules.”

As well as permit requirements, curfews are in place for all trucks on Somerville Road between Geelong Road and Whitehall Street.

These are in effect 8pm- 6am weeknights and from 1pm Saturday to 6am Monday, and during school pick up times – 8am-9.30am and 2.30pm-4pm.

These extended curfews have been in place since 2015.

VicRoads advises heavy vehicle owners and operators to contact the NHVR to obtain a permit to travel on Somerville Road.
