A number of heavy vehicles are still missing after VicRoads wrongly transferred the vehicle registrations into the name of a person who did not own them.

A Victoria Police spokesman confirmed that "a number of thefts and deceptions" in relation to Victorian transport business Hennessy Transport are being investigated.

"It is believed that a number of vehicles registrations were fraudulently transferred from the business into another person’s name," the spokesman says.

"A number of vehicles remain outstanding and are yet to be recovered."

It has been a tough time recently for VicRoads, with Victoria’s Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) released figures showing the roads authority was the one with the most alerts against it. Click here to read our story

The Herald Sun reported today that 19 trucks and 15 trailers belonging to Hennessy Transport had been taken by people unrelated to the company after they allegedly used fake business ownership documents to get the vehicle registrations transferred to their name.

The newspaper reports Hennessy Transport boss Leon Hennessy as saying that he had seen his equipment being driven around Melbourne by another operator while he was left with no income and his sub-contractors with no work.

VicRoads executive director of registration and licensing Sally Curtain told the Herald Sun that it was looking into how this had occurred.

"At the request of Victoria Police, we have reinstated the registrations back into the original name," the newspaper reports Curtain as saying.

"I’ve spoken with Mr Hennessy and told him we’re running a thorough investigation to understand how this occurred."

VicRoads were contacted for further comment but did not respond before deadline.

Hennessy could not be reached for comment.

An Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) notice shows that liquidators were appointed to a company named as Hennessy Transport Pty Ltd in March following a meeting of company members.
