National Transport Insurance is celebrating the life and work of former CEO Wayne Patterson following his passing
National Transport Insurance (NTI) has shared the sad news of the passing of its former chief executive officer Wayne Patterson on Tuesday, October 9.
Patterson’s journey with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) was widely known due to his unrelenting drive to increase community awareness of the disease, while raising much needed funds in the search for an MND cure. His connections with the broader business, insurance, transport and logistics industries were vast and he valued the support he received from these communities.
Patterson took the helm of NTI at a very difficult time for the business. NTI CEO Tony Clark often tells the story of how Wayne set out on a path to rebuild the company starting with the people, values, and an engaging, optimistic attitude.
“Wayne had tremendous people skills and no one could better communicate a vision. With the support of the Board, led by Duncan West and Bob Wagstaff, he brought together the NTI team and, over seven years, firmly positioned the company as Australia’s number one truck insurer – which set the foundation for what NTI is today.”
“After moving on from the company, he never strayed too far and regularly caught up with some of the NTI team – always with some pertinent advice! It’s fair to say much of what NTI is today could not have eventuated without ‘Patto’ making his mark.
“Just some of Wayne’s lasting achievements at NTI include the establishment of NTI Accident Assist and the NTI Premium Repairer network, the introduction of company values, and the establishment of a Customer Charter.”

Following his diagnosis with MND in 2015, Patterson created the character ‘Fat Rabbit’ to raise funds for the MND and Me Foundation.
“It’s been such a privilege for us to watch Wayne’s incredible drive in the last few years to write books and develop such a loveable character to share ‘good values’ with young children while raising money for MND,” Clark says.
NTI says it has an enduring commitment to continuing to raise awareness and research funding for an MND cure.
“Our people have a genuine connection to the cause. We will continue to honour Wayne through that commitment,” Clark says.
The funeral for Wayne Patterson will be held on October 16 at 2pm, Southport Church of Christ Auditorium, Queensland. NTI advises that, in lieu of flowers, donations to MDE and Me Foundation would be appreciated.
