Truck driver deaths spark TWU investigation calls

Multiple crashes concern union, QTA mourns victim

The Transport Workers Union (TWU) has responded to a horror 24 hours on the nation’s roads following truck-crash fatalities in Queensland and New South Wales.

In one incident, a multi-truck crash involving a car-carrier and a pantech on Picton Road at Wilton, in Sydney’s south-west, killed one driver while the other was freed from the wreckage.

In another, a Lindsay Transport truck rolled off the side of an elevated stretch of Logan Motorway at Tanah Merah, south of Brisbane, where the driver, a 57-year-old man from NSW, was trapped for several hours upon being discovered.

“Yesterday was a devastating day for two families and the trucking community. What we need is a focus on the entire transport supply chain,” TWU secretary Michael Kaine says.

The incidents “must be investigated and the role of wealthy companies which contract transport operators closely examined”, the TWU statement reads.

QTA mourns driver

The Queensland Trucking Association (QTA) extended its sympathies towards the driver of Lindsay Transport, which is an association member.

“On behalf of the QTA board of directors, we offer our condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and Lindsay Australia staff at this difficult time. We are providing support to our members Lindsay Australia,” it says.

QTA also passed on a statement from Linday Transport CEO Kim Lindsay in response to the incident.

“Our thoughts are very much with the family, friends and colleagues of the driver who has tragically passed away from this incident south of Brisbane,” he says.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be established and we will continue to work closely with the relevant authorities. Our immediate priority is to provide the best possible assistance and support to the family and colleagues of the driver.”
